Fabric stores in Italy – Negozi di Stoffa in Italia

On this page I will try to list fabric stores in main Italian cities. Perhaps you could buy some Italian fabric as souvenir of your trip.
Italy is the country of fashion fabric. Generally you won’t find much quilting cotton as in the US or in the UK, but you will have plenty of wool, shirting cotton, suitings and more.
I also have a specific page dedicated to online stores in Europe

In questa pagina troverete una lista di negozi di tessuti nelle principali città italiane e dei negozi di stoffa online.

Store opening hours

Stores in Italy generally open at 9.30 or 10 a.m and close at 7 or 7.30 p.m.
They generally close at lunch time between 12 and 3.30 pm . It is only in the city center that stores don´t break for lunch and generally it wouldn´t apply to fabric stores.
Some stores may be closed on Monday mornings or Saturdays afternoons.
Stores may be closed during the summer around August 15th (it´s a holiday in Italy)
The above is indicative as hours may vary from town to town.

  1. Hi
I’m looking to purchase some wool crepe pale pink fabric suitable for an elegant dress.

Can you please advise if you have any wool crepe fabrics.

    Kind regards

  2. Ciao! Brilliant page. I went round all the Largo Argentina fabric stores last weekend but the fabrics there are just soooo expensive. I popped into Casa del Tessuto on Monday and made some bargain buys (mainly because I bought out of season, not yet priced articles). Will try the own you mention by Battistini, which is quite close to where I live. TWO floors of fabric?? I can’t wait!
    Thanks for the tip 🙂

    1. The lower floor is full of home dec fabric. Best bargains are on the racks. But you can also find decently priced lycra and dancewear fabric. Bridal wear is quite expensive. I saw a good selection of crepe.

  7. I have a retail haute couture fabric store founded since 1922 for ladies. I am very interested in buying close out beaded tulles, laces, guipiures, embroidered textiles with flowers, stones, feathers… like the textiles used by famous designers like Elie Saab, Zuhair Muraad, Carolina Herrera, Dolce & Gabbana, in more or less 7 meter lenghth pieces. I know of people who have obtained them in warehouses in Como.
I could send photos of items that I would like to obtain. They would have to be close outs to obtain reasonable and competitive prices.
I appreciate your time and attentions towards the matter.
    Sincerly,
    Janinna

  8. Dear Silvia,
thank you that you shared with this information.
As I’m living quite far from Europe, I want to clarify regarding the shops that you had identified above. Are these shops sells for retail? Do every shop sells with different high fashion designers fabrics or one of these specializing on cotton only, for example? I think you understand me that I’m looking for very exclusive, trendy and interesting fabrics (such as Prada, Valentino, Dolce, Chanel, etc). I’m just trying to understand should I go to Como o to Milano too. What their usual price range for such fabrics per yard (let’s say 50-100 or 100-150)?

I will much appreciate for your reply.

    1. Dear Assel,
the shop sell to retail customers. They sell any type of fashion fabric, not just cotton. In Milano you may find some, but again if you are looking for higher volumes you may need to find a different channel. Have a look at this http://vallitessuti.com/?lang=en Tessuti Alta Moda is what you are looking for in Italian. I would expect prices to be over 50 euros per meter (slightly more than a yard)

    1. Congratulations Liz! I really hope you will like the region. It’s gorgeous.
The best place to buy garment fabric is street markets, it seems.
Markets in Italy are generally a really nice experience. I did a bit of searching for you and found this.
In Naples you could try Piazza Mercato market or Mercatino di antignano near piazza Medaglie d’Oro in Vomero area. Some info on this page http://www.napolidavivere.it/2010/12/06/migliori-10-mercatini-napoli/ There’s also Esposito for shirtings but it’s closed until Sept. 1 https://www.facebook.com/pages/Luciano-Esposito-Tessuti-per-camiceria-Since-1945/641086405924518 It’s not far from the train station. Foodwise (sorry I can’t help it!) If you go to Naples try sfogliatelle from Scaturchio http://www.scaturchio.it/, Pizza and hazelnut coffee at Caffe’ del Professore…espresso coffee in general is great! http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g187785-d1896063-Reviews-Caffe_Del_Professore-Naples_Province_of_Naples_Campania.html

In Salerno you can try Stadio Vestuti market or Cucitomania Via Federico Wenner 83, Zona Ind/le di Fratte http://www.cucitomania.it/ though they mostly have quilting cottons and such which are generally imported from the US.

In Sorrento you could try Catapano Antonio Corso Italia, 263
      Hope it helps

  16. Dear Silvia
Wow! Thank you for this post. I have been looking online for ages for a place that I could purchase material. Every place I have been to between Borgotaro and Parma ONLY do housewares; material to make curtains, cushion covers, table cloths but not only that they didn’t even do proper material to make dresses. I, however, am after material to make toys. Fabric like fleece or minky (also called cuddle soft) and I am having to purchase from ebay.co.uk because no one in my town can even tell me what these fabrics are called in Italian.
Could you help? Do you possibly know of a shop nearby? Or know what (anti-pill polar) fleece is called over here? Coz that would be great.
I started a business making toys (eventually I would also like to make 1950-60 swing and wiggle dresses) and getting replacement material to continue making them or start making anything else has been difficult and eventually expensive because of having to order from the UK.
Any advice or tips would be amazing.
Best wishes and thanks again for the fab post.

    1. Hi Kat! You´re welcome. I actually need to update the page with online store links. Fleece in Italian is ´pile´…I know…doesn’t sound Italian at all. As for Minky…I don´t know myself. I’ve actually never seen it in a store before. I will be visiting some stores soon and could try and ask. In the meantime, you could try and contact http://www.emmepitessuti.com/ They say they could do stock orders or could cater for specific ´large orders´ needs. In terms of prices, it very much depends…sometimes I find it cheaper to order from the UK or Germany. Hope this is useful for you.

  21. Hi Silvia

Thank you for a great page.

Although fabrics shopping in Sicily is not included in this page, perhaps you know or you can point me in the right direction in my search for fabrics remnants which are sold at the markets.
Several years ago I found some great fabrics at the market in Florence, I am hoping that I can also find something in Sicily. I will be in Trapani, Palermo, Taormina and Catania.
I found some markets in Palermo but I do not know which one of tchem sells fabrics.

    Best regards

    1. Anna, I am afraid I am not familiar with markets in Sicily. However, I did a search for you and found that in Ballaro´ market and in the ´American´ market they should sell fabric. Whoa, Sicily is a great place to visit…food is fantastic too. Taormina is gorgeous (had the best ´gelsi´ granita ever there on the main square). If you are not in a hurry I could try and find some more info. I also updated the list with a store in Catania.

      1. Thank you so much Silvia.

Ballaro market- great! I found that it is open weekdays and Saturdays.
I can not find any info about “American ” market, could you explain what is it?
Thank you for a shop in Catania.

I am not in hurry, I am going to Sicily at the end of September, but I am already gathering all the information.

Next step will be to find places with yarns, perhaps Ballaro will have some yarns also….. and the last not least… to research typical local food and of course find places with best gelatos and granitas, for your tip with Taormina I am very greatful.

        Thank you
        Anna

      2. Anna,
I haven’t found much but this store on my list could perhaps be all you need http://www.stiltexgroup.it/EN/where-we-are-located.html
They sell online and apparently are based not far from Taormina and Giardini Naxos. I am not sure they are also a brick and mortar store, but you could drop them an email.
As for yarn, my go to stores for Made in Italy are online http://creakitshop.com/ and http://www.thewoolbox.it, if there’s something you like perhaps you could try and arrange a shipping while in Italy…though I understand it might prove difficult when travelling among different locations…otherwise they do ship abroad.
I really hope you will enjoy Sicily…am actually thinking I should also visit again sometime.

  24. Hi Silvia,

Great blog! Thank you for the tips. My mum and I will be Florence and Venice in the next two weeks. Can you recommend some fairly central fabric shops, I’m looking for silks, linens and cottons primarily and love bold colours or natural colours. My mother is a weaver and is looking for silk and woollen yarns.

    Thank you in advance.

    1. Renee, the top three stores in Florence on my list are central. In Venice I could only find one. There are loads of stores but they are outside Venice. In Mestre for example you can find Giesse Scampoli with some bargains (though a bit of a hit and miss kind of store). Generally, Italy veers more natural colors but you can find great prints too. As for yarns, my go to stores for Made in Italy are online http://creakitshop.com/ and http://www.thewoolbox.it (the website is in Italian but you can write them in English if you like…they are super passionate and knowledgeable about wool) Perhaps, you could arrange shipping at the place you’re staying or home!

I am in Tuscany currently and planned to talk my husband into going to Milan for some fabrics in our way back to Poland… But started wondering if this is really the best place to go… I am looking mainly for silk and cotton in decent prices. We are quite flexible in terms of chosing our way back, so I wondered if you could give me any hint on where I should be heading. Many thanks in advance! Redards Klaudia

Ohhh and I was wondering if there is any place in Italy where I could buy historic editions of La Mia Boutique? Thanks again :))

    1. Hi Klaudia,
I hope you are enjoying your Italian trip. Regarding your question, I believe the biggest challenge if you are traveling back this week or the next is that some stores might be closed for vacation. I would advise you to give them a call and check. If you don’t want to go to Milan, you could try heading to Giesse Scampoli. They are several stores in Italy. Their collection highly depends on the store and season (a bit of a hit or miss), but their prices are extremely reasonable. In Milan, I would try Tessuti e Scampoli, Emmepi tessuti or possibly Raponi. You can find all info on my page.
As for historic editions of La Mia Boutique, the best would be Ebay or an Italian sewing forum http://www.forumdicucito.com/ I don’t know of any stores where you could find them. There are also some Italian groups on Facebook. Alternatively, you could contact LMB directly via email…but I’m now sure how far back they keep their issues, also because I noticed that older issues were edited by a different company.

  26. Your site is very informative, job well done. We are off to Rome next month for the 2nd time. Found your site and have noted all the fabric shops in Rome and looking forward to a day of shopping. Question – do the fabric shops also sell patterns or is that a separate store? I have heard there are good Italian patterns available. John, the Netherlands

    1. Thanks for your comment! I´m afraid finding patterns in Italy is not a very easy task. Except for Burda, they are generally hard to find. I can suggest La Mia Boutique magazine which you can get at newsstands. Alternatively, for something very Italian http://www.marfy.it/ (they ship worldwide and also have pdf). Have fun in Rome!

    1. Hi Paula, is this what you are looking for? http://www.rosalba-milano.it/it/biancheria_casa.html and http://www.biancheriamanescalchi.it/salotto-living.html I must admit it’s something I’m not familiar with. If you search for biancheria per la casa (home linens…it’s the category name) or tovaglia ricamata (embroidered tablecloth) or tovagliolo ricamato (embroidered napkins) you should be able to find something. Good luck and have a great trip!

I am hoping for sites where I might find fabric remnants of Scalamandre Melagrano in Maize. I amadvised it is made in Italy, and I do not have any Italian distribution knowledge. Any suggestions?

  29. Coming to Italy in early October. I am a quilter. Going to several regions, Rome, Venice, Naples, Florence, Sorrento. Where can I find a place to buy cotton fabric and what is the average price per yard? Remnants will do also. Thankyou. Cherie

    1. Sounds like a nice trip ahead! Unfortunately, quilting is not a tradition in Italy. So if you´re looking for quilting cottons you´re often bound to find imported designs and prices are generally more expensive than in the US (see http://www.robertademarchi.com/catalogo/5/Tessuti_Patchwork_&_Co..html). That said you might also find heavier cottons that are suitable for quilting. If I were you I would favor fashion fabric when visiting Italy. That´s where you will find the best choice. Wool, silk, shirting cotton and much more in a wide range of prices. On my list you will find a lot to choose from.

  30. Hi!!!!

Recently I have decided to start a small business (in Russia) – to sew a children’s clothes – as I am a young mother.
I have the friends – a married couple of artists who are ready to create with me fantastic prints for baby’s clothes, the only we need is to decide the issue with materials, I mean the clothes precisely! Where to sew, or to buy the ready one. Given that I am crazy a little bit and want to order the clothes only in Italy’s fabric (because of the quality, the variety of materials etc…) I have the problem now which I are to tackle with – to find out the addresses, contacts of the fabrics, that sew the children’s clothes. I mean the Fabrics, where I may choose the materials, show them the particular models (design) and the will sew for me this order (Is it possible I hope?)))Any way, if You could help me some how..) Please! Perhaps, You know. I must confess I have just started making my business plan and in any way I hope to open it, just because this is for the baby I want to do my best…)

    Thank You in advance!
    Sincerely,

    Valery

    1. Hi Valery,
it’s certainly possible to do this in Italy. There are a lot of small/medium sized companies that work for big brands. I’m afraid I’m not an expert in this field. If I were to look for it myself I would search for “abbigliamento bambini conto terzi” but you might need someone who speaks Italian to get you trough that. Good luck.

I’m also looking for a good shop with buttons, patches and other little things near Milan, Verona, Geona, Florence, maybe Rome. Could you help me please? 35. I will be visiting Montepulciano with my mother in early September and already know that we have to dedicate at least half a day to finding some good fabric stores to indulge my mom’s fabric obsession! 🙂 Are there any good stores to visit that sell garment fabrics that are in any of the nearby towns/cities or is our best bet to drive to Florence? Thank you so much for any advice and I’m so happy I found this post to help make this my mom’s dream vacation!

    1. Hi Maggie! so cool you’re going to be visiting. It’s so nice you’re trying to find stores for your mom. Here are some addresses I found for you. Please note that I haven’t been to any of them. Unfortunately, the majority don’t have a website so it’s hard for me to tell what kind of fabric they sell.
      Montepulciano
https://www.tripadvisor.it/ShowUserReviews-g194833-d3657018-r146491345-Biagianti_dal_1913-Montepulciano_Tuscany.html (more home furnishings but very typical as you can see from the pictures)
      Siena
https://www.paginegialle.it/siena-si/tessuti-e-stoffe/trame-capacci-gabriele (not sure about this one…but if you’re there)
      Arezzo
http://www.giessescampoli.com/negozi/arezzo (this is a chain store and you can find nice bargains as well as bolt ends…if I were to choose one store I would go here!)
      Perugia
https://www.tessutiparentesimoda.com/dove-siamo (this one looks pretty promising too)
      Florence
You can find some addresses on my website

if you use ‘tessuti abbigliamento vendita al dettaglio’ and then add the name of the city you will be able to get some results via search engine. To search for stores selling notions use ‘merceria’

  36. I’m looking for PVC Coated Polyester FABRIC used for making gymnastics equipment/mats. In the US, it’s priced about €3 a square meter. The best price I have found in Sicily is €9 a square meter! The local Tappezzeria will order it from Catania (I live in San Cataldo). I’m not sure how much of a mark up he adds. Can it be bought direct? I’m having issues searching as my Italian language skills are lacking…

    1. Hi Martina, in Bologna you could try Valli http://vallitessuti.com/negozio-bologna/ or Supercut http://supercut.it/en/. Supercut doesn´t have a store front, it´s an online store but the owner is based in Bologna so if you contact her I´m sure you could arrange a visit. If you are traveling by car I could reccomend http://www.allutexonline.com/ in Carpi, near Modena. Here as well you should contact them to arrange a visit/pickup
For cheaper options you could go to Giesse Scampoli with several stores in Northern Italy http://www.giessescampoli.com/negozi
