Together with Basic Black, I got Stylish Skirts, the second Sato Watanabe book recently translated in English. Well, the title says it all: it’s all about skirts, 23 to be precise. Due to lack of time, I didn’t manage to make any of these projects yet.

Insieme a Basic Black, ho ricevuto Stylish Skits (Gonne con stile) il secondo libro di Sato Watanabe recentemente tradotto in inglese. Come si capisce dal titolo e’ un libro di gonne…ce ne sono 23. Purtroppo per mancanza di tempo non sono ancora riuscita a cucirne nessuna.

This one is possibly my favorite. It’s an a-line skirt made from twelve trapezoids with lines of tape. It also features embroidery in the bottom section with simple diagonal running stitch.

Questa è forse quella che preferisco. E’ una gonna svasata composta da 12 trapezi e applicazioni a righe. La parte bassa è ricamata con punti diagonali. 

 Next up a box pleated skirt. This skirt is fully lined so if you have never lined skirts, it’s your chance. Personally, I like reading construction methods in Japanese books as sometimes they are slighly different from others. Ok…I am a geek!

Questa gonna a pieghe è foderata quindi se non sapete come si fa, questa potrebbe essere la gonna adatta per imparare. Personalmente mi piace leggere i metodi di costruzione usati nei libri giapponesi perché a volte sono diversi da quelli che si trovano in altri libri…OK…sono un po’ fissata! 

Next up a wrap skirt. I am not so keen on frilled edges but I do like a wrap! This skirt doesn’t have darts but tucks…I would be curious to see how it fits.

Una gonna a portafoglio. Non mi piacciono troppo quelle rouches ma per il resto mi piace. In questa gonna non ci sono pinces ma pieghe…sarei curiosa di vedere come veste.

There are a couple of balloon skirts in the book.

And this one is another of my favorites. I would love to make one in beige, white and black.

E questa è un´altra delle mie preferite. Mi piacerebbe farne una in beige, bianco e nero.

Typical Japanese book…drawings aplenty.

Tipico libro giappnese pieno di disegni tecnici.

The book does not include any patterns but explains how to draft your skirt using your body measurements. Though I appreciate having a ready-made pattern when it comes to complex garments…simple skirts are one of those things where you can actually have a better fitting garments if you use your body measurements.

Nel libro non ci sono cartamodelli ma viene spiegato come creare le gonne usando le proprie misure. Anche se mi piace usare i cartamodelli già fatti quando si tratta di linee complicate…le gonne semplici sono facili da disegnare e usando le proprie misure il risultato di solito è migliore. 

The book includes basic sewing terms and explains techniques such as tips for making better skirts, preparing your fabric, finishing off seam allowances, attaching linings, sewing welt pockets, attaching hook and bar, buttons, creating buttonholes and even hand embroidery. It’s not a technique book of course but thanks to drawings I found it quite useful.

So, if you wish to give patternmaking a try, this book is for you. The projects are easy enough to draft while still interesting and including some nice techniques.

Nel libro sono spiegati anche termini base del cucito e ci sono consigli per cucire meglio le gonne, preparare la stoffa, rifinire i margini di cucitura, attaccare la fodera, fare tasche profilate, attaccare gancetti, bottoni e fare asole…e persino come ricamare a mano. Non è un libro di tecniche ma grazie ai disegni l’ho trovato utile.  

Quindi se volete provare a creare dei cartamodelli questo libro può far per voi. Le gonne sono piuttosto semplici da disegnare ma al tempo stesso interessanti e utili per imparare nuove cose.
