This is certainly not the first Miette Cardigan of the year…not to mention it’s not the only blue version: Julia, Lauren and recently Joanne knitted one too. I believe it’s one of the most popular patterns! Andi Satterlund was really generous to publish it for free.

Now…is the Sewing Princess turning into a Knitting Princess??? You may be wondering??? What’s up with everybody taking up knitting these days???

I found 15 balls of beautiful angora that was bought in France 13 years ago…but life takes its turns and I accidentally found it two years ago. My knitting being very poor and me not particularly enjoying it, I kept on postponing it.

Miette Cardigans were popping everywhere…I really liked the pattern, I even downloaded it. All those abbreviations K2, yo, kfbl, pm, k0 (1, 2), made me want to pull my hair out!

What I needed was a understanding knitting patterns for beginners!

Ho trovato 15 gomitoli di bellissima lana di angora comprata in Francia 13 anni fa… ma la vita a volte fa dei giri strani ed è arrivata a me per caso due anni fa. Sono sempre stata una frana con la maglia e non mi è mai piacuto molto…quindi l´ho lasciata lì.

Poi ho cominciato a vedere Cardigan Miette dappertutto…mi piaceva molto il modello e l´ho anche scaricato. Ma quelle abbreviazioni K2, yo, kfbl, pm, k0 (1, 2), mi facevano venire il mal di testa al primo sguardo!

Mi servivaa un corso per decifrare le istruzioni fatto per principianti!

After not finding a single soul who could knit the sweater for me (I was willing to pay of course)…Asking Evie over in the UK or Alessa in Germany seemed too far-fetched! One day I started searching the Internet for knitting classes.

On 9/11 I found an Angel! Her name is Lucia and she has a online store called Amici di maglia (roughly translates as Knitting friends). Not only does she sell yarn but she also teaches knitting classes through Skype!

She is a very experienced knitter and in just one tailor-made class was able to unveil the pattern mystery to me!

Purtroppo non sono riuscita a trovare nessuna anima pia che potesse farlo per me (anche se ero disposta a pagarlo)…Chiederlo ad Evie in Inghilterra o Alessa in Germania mi sembrava un po’ troppo! Quindi un giorno mi sono messa a cercare corsi di maglia su Internet.

L’11 settembre ho trovato il mio Angelo! Si chiama Lucia e ha un negozio online che si chiama  Amici di maglia. Oltre a vendere lana, insegna dei corsi di maglia tramite Skype!

Ha molta esperienza e in una sola lezione ´su misura´ è riuscita a svelare i misteri del modello!

That same evening I started to eagerly knit…but only six rows later things didn’t add up anymore…undoing stitches when you are using angora and are a beginner who can’t even count stitches is not a piece of cake…there I was taking my work apart and starting again.

That’s where my second Angel came to the rescue…Gail from Today’s agenda and her Miette Knitalong How else can you call a woman who not only hosts a knit-along, films videos but also puts together a Stitch count spreadsheet?

Miette pattern may be rated as a average difficulty but that eyelet pattern is quite challenging and certainly keeping track of your stitch count makes your life a lot easier. It’s so easy to lose track…and undoing your work is a pain!!!

Not to mention the stitch count spreadsheet helped me understand how to count stitches: a k2tog means that 2 stiches become 1. That may seem obvious once you know it but it was not the case for me!

La sera stessa mi sono messa a fare la maglia…ma dopo appena 6 ferri avevo già perso il conto…disfare i punti con della lana d’angora e con il mio livello non è facile…quindi ho disfatto il lavoro e ricominciato da zero.

A quel punto è venuto in mio soccorso il mio secondo Angelo…Gail del blog Today’s Agenda e le sue spiegazioni passo passo per fare Miette Non si può dire altro di una persona come Gail che organizza un ´facciamo la maglia insieme´, gira dei video e addirittura prepara un file con il conteggio dei punti!

Anche se il Miette è considerato di difficoltà normale il disegno bucherellato è piuttosto complicato da fare e sicuramente se riesci a contare i punti diventa tutto più facile. è così facile perdersi…e disfare il lavoro è davvero una p…a!!!

E poi seguendo il conteggio ho cominciato a capire come contare i punti: k2tog è una diminuzione e 2 punti diventano 1. Potrà sembrare ovvio ma non era così per me!

Miette pattern is beautifully explained so it’s certainly perfect as a first attempt at knitting a cardigan. It’s top-down so you can try it on while you knit and you don’t need to sew pieces together. But I wouldn’t have been able to do it without Gail’s tutorial. The pattern does not explain how to pick up sleeve stitches, nor does it explain how to knit in the round, or how to pick up the stitches the at the button band or neck edging.

It assumes you know…just like someone could tell you attach the zipper to your skirt…and you don’t know where to start! Certainly it’s not the pattern fault because you can’t explain everything, but it’s just to say that as a beginner you need this info. So once again a huge thanks to Gail and to Johanna from Making it well for helping me!

Il Miette è spiegato molto bene e per questo è perfetto come primo maglione. Poi si lavora dall’alto verso il basso quindi non ci sono cuciture e lo puoi provare mentre lo fai. Ma non ce l´avrei mai fatta senza le spiegazioni di Gail. 

Le istruzioni non dicono come fare a riprendere le maglie delle maniche, come lavorare in tondo o come prendere le maglie per lavorare i bordi e girocollo.

Da per scontato che la persona sappia farlo già…proprio come un modello potrebbe indicare ´cucire la lampo sulla gonna´ e tu non sai che pesci prendere! Di certo non è colpa del modello perché non può spiegare tutto, ma è per dire che un principiante ha bisogno di queste ingormazione. Quindi grazie ancora a Gail e a Johanna di Making it well per il prezioso aiuto!

Another thing I had troubles with where the sleeves…knitting in the round was not difficult as I initially thought…but the pattern didn’t say you needed extra supplies to knit the sleeves! I had bought my circular needle with a very long cable…but when I got down to 48 stitches for the sleeves I realized I had a problem!

Yes, feel free to laugh! 😉 I am laughing at myself now.

I bought shorter cables (Thanks Lucia for rescuing me!) as other people seemed to do that  but even then I seemed to be stretching the stitches too much. DPNs (double pointed needles) seemed too much for me to handle.

Someone had previously mentioned Magic Loop something I had no idea about…until I started to research it and eventually learned how to do it! Finally I could knit those sleeves easily! Magic loop seemed very difficult at the beginning but after some practice on scrap yarn I got it.

A couple of days ago Lucia told me for hats and sleeves she swears by Hiya Hiya mini circular needles (though she is normally not a bamboo knit fan) Have you tried those?

L’altra nota dolente sono state le maniche…lavorare in tondo non è stato troppo difficile…ma nelle istruzioni non c’era scritto che avevi bisogno di ´strumenti´ speciali per lavorare le maniche! Avevo comprato dei ferri circolari con un filo molto lungo…ma quando mi sono ritrovata con 48 maglie per le maniche mi sono resa conto di avere un problema!

Ho comprato un cavo più corto (Grazie Lucia per avermi salvata!) come hanno fatto altri ma anche in quel modo i punti si allargavano troppo. I ferri a doppia punta mi sembravano ipercomplicati 

Qualcuno mi aveva parlato del Magic Loop (l’anello magico) e non sapevo cosa fosse…fino a quando non ho cominciato a fare una ricerca e ho imparato anch’io. Finalmente sono riuscita a lavorare le maniche. Il Magic Loop sembrava difficile all´inizio ma ho fatto un po’ di pratica e ci sono riuscita.

Un paio di giorni fa Lucia mi ha detto che lei usa i Mini Ferri Circolari Hiya Hiya per lavorare cappelli e maniche. Anche se non ama i ferri in bamboo si trova besinissimo con questi. Voi li avete mai provati?

A detail of the design and my first ever self-covered buttons…It’s quite a fiddly task I must admit. Possibly with thinner fabric or bigger buttons covering buttons may be easier.

Un dettaglio del disegno e i miei primi bottoni ricoperti di stoffa. E´ stato abbastanza complicato incastrare la stoffa. Forse usandone una meno pesante o dei bottoni più grandi sarebbe stato più semplice.

In the end I made a size 34.

I lengthened the bodice by 2 inches as more experienced ladies did before me (Andrea and Karen I am referring to you!)

I lengthened the sleeves by 10 rows

I kept the bust darts (boob job seemed to me less scary than moving those darts to the side as Gail did!) Thankfully I the sweater fits fine as is! Phew!!!

Though I did add 8 buttonholes…my bind off was not stretchy enough…so I went for the open look! The extra 5 buttonholes are so small you can’t find them!

I didn’t reinforce the button band with grosgrain. Lauren has some pictures of that.

It took me two months to finish it.

Ho fatto la taglia piu’ piccola (34 pollici)

Ho allungato il corpino di 5 cm come Andrea e Karen hanno fatto prima di me 

Ho allungato le maniche aggiungendo 10 ferri.

Ho tenuto le pince al seno (la prospettiva di rifarmi il seno mi faceva meno paura che spostare quelle maglie sul lato come ha fatto Gail!) Per fortuna non è stato necessario. Il maglione mi sta così com’è!

Ho aggiunto le 8 asole ma quando ho chiuso il lavoro la vita non è rimasta abbastanza elastica. Quindi ho deciso di usarne solo 3. Le altre 5 sono talmente piccole che non si vedono neanche.

Non ho rinforzato l´abbottonatura con del grosgrain. Se vi interessa ci sono foto sul blog di Lauren

Ci ho messo esattamente 2 mesi a completarlo.

A final shot to show you my super funky pants…though I normally wear plain fabric I have a thing for 70’s prints and when I saw these pants in a store (and they surprisingly fit me!) I had to get them! There’s now way I will ever find a similar fabric and make my own…and they are even made in Italy!

Now….do you have any knitting tips for me??? Because I wasn’t challenged enough as it is I decided to learn how to knit continental! And let me tell you my hands feel very awkward at it!!!

Un´ultima foto per farvi vedere i miei pazzi pantaloni…anche se di solito non uso molte fantasie mi piacciono i disegni anni 70 e quando li ho visti da Combipel (e mi andavano anche bene) li ho presi! Tanto non riuscirei mai a trovare una stoffa del genere e farne un paio…e sono anche fatti in Italia!

E per concludere…Avete qualche consiglio di maglia da darmi??? Visto che la sfida del maglione non era abbastanza ho deciso di imparare a fare a maglia con il metodo continentale! Le mie mani sembrano essere un po’ reticenti alla cosa però!!!
