A while ago while watching the movie El Tiempo entre Costuras – The Seamstress I got obsessed with one of the fabulous dresses. A short while later I bought some double knit to make it.
As you can see I omitted the buttons (the original dress was probably made in a woven) and my cuffs are less pointy.
Little did I know that tracing Simplicity New Look 6000 and drafting the collar and retracing the front neckline would take me so long! Not to mention taking pictures and writing this post!
The pattern is a basic darted shift dress. As I made it before, I knew what size to use. Though I was surprised to find out I had to unpick the bust darts (picture some head banging against the wall!)…they were too low! Instead of a full zip I went for a short lapped zip. I absolutely wanted to avoid awful bumps going down the back seam. Being a knit dress you don’t need much of an opening to put it on!
Let me tell you that at some point I was worried I would look like a waitress or a nun…;)
Have you been sewing something ‘daring’ lately?
Avete cucito qualcosa ‘fuori dall’ordinario’ recentemente?
fantastic! looks really cool! (also love your previous red version & the beautiful pictures of rome…) thanks for sharing- your projects are always an inspiration! 🙂 (ps. your pose in the first picture reminds me of a kimbra music video, in a good way 🙂 )

Well done Silvia! Isn’t it is true that drafting even the smallest design details takes a lot of time. But, it’s so fun to create a look based on a garment from a film! PS You look very chic and sophisticated! I must check out this movie.

Thanks Sue! I’m super slow when it comes to drafting. Last night it took me the whole evening to trace a pattern;)

Gorgeus dress, it looks exactly like your inspiraption, ok maybe the cuffs as you say are not as pointy but other than that it’s the same! I didn’t know this is a movie too, I’m watching the tv series which is with the same actress!

Oh I must look up this series then! I loved the actress in that movie.

It does look great and sophisticated! Great job! Such a daring project to make! I don’t know if I have enough patience to re-draft a pattern, as you did. I’d probably stop working on a project. My last daring project did not turn out sucessfully, so at the moment, I sew less challenging garments.

The drafting part was actually minimal. The pattern provides a darted version too. So in the end it was just the collar and the neckline…but I was slow nonetheless! I like to sew easy patterns too…you will see one in the coming weeks!
