When I saw this title being released in English…I immediately got very curious. I love dresses and am very keen on Japanese design couldn’t wait to see what a Japanese fashion designer would come up with on Party Dresses.
The kind people at Tuttle send me Stylish Party Dresses for review…so here is a sneak peak for you. The English version has just been released a couple of days ago.

The cover dress is one of my favorites from the book. I’m just dying to make a tulle skirt…I just need a party! The bodice is darted. As you can probably notice from the picture, styles are not as fitted as you could expect. Which in a way is ok since Japanese sizing is smaller than what you usually see in Western magazines/patterns.

Quando ho scoperto che questo libro sarebbe stato tradotto in inglese mi sono incuriosita subito. Mi piace cucire vestiti e la semplicita’ dei modelli giapponesi quindi ero curiosa di vedere cosa la stilista avrebbe realizzato sul tema: Abiti eleganti.

La Tuttle mi ha spedito Stylish Party Dresses per una recensione…Il sottotitolo dice 26 Vestiti facili ed economici da cucire per un’occasione speciale…quindi eccone qui un assaggio per voi. La versione inglese e’ in vendita da un paio di giorni e se preferite questo libro e’ anche tradotto in francese Dressing Chic & Classique

Il vestito della copertina è uno dei miei preferiti. Ho proprio voglia di cucire una gonna di tulle…devo solo trovare una festa a cui andare! Il corpino ha delle pinces. Come immaginerete dalla foto, lo stile e’ meno attillato di quello che ci si aspetterebbe. Da una parte è positivo perché le taglie giapponesi di solito sono più piccole di quelle che si trovano su cartamodelli e riviste occidentali.

A sweet lace dress that you could certainly make in many different fabrics…

My proofreader eye just noticed a typo on the book ‘How to made it’ instead of ‘How to make it’ I guess we can live with it…I wish I could translate from Japanese!

Un vestito in pizzo declinabile con molte stoffe diverse.

Il mio occhio da correttore di bozze ha anche notato un errore di battitura ‘How to made it’ invece di  ‘How to make it’…credo che non sia un dramma…magari potessi tradurre dal giapponese!

This black dress has bust darts and includes an camisole-type underdress and is made out of Polyester georgette a fabric that doesn’t wrinkle easily and feel smooth against the skin…must buy some of this fabric for sure!

Anche il corpino di questo vestito nero ha delle pinces e una sottoveste. E’ realizzato in georgette di poliestere…una stoffa morbida al tatto e che non si sgualcisce…credo di aver proprio bisogno di stoffa così!
Here is another of my favorites…I love the red fabric and gathers…though I must admit I am not sure I could pull of such a volume. The dress is fully lined.

Un’altro dei miei preferiti…adoro il rosso e le pieghe…anche se non so se mi sentirei a mio agio con tanto volume. Il vestito è completamente foderato.
Here is a lace bolero with a Silky Sleveless dress…The pattern is nice but unfortunately that stares frightens me every time I look at it. It’s clearly a different aesthetic.

Un bolerino in pizzo con un vestito senza maniche in seta…il modello potrebbe anche andare ma quello sguardo mi impaurisce ogni volta che lo guardo. Chiaramente l’estetica è diversa.
Oh a wrap dress! I love those. This one is made for a knit fabric…again quite loose fit (Compare with Style Arc Kate Dress. Liberty on the left and in black to the right…which the book says is quite handy because you can use it as funeral wear too (I love findings these gems in sewing books…tells you so much about cultures).

Oh, un vestito a portafoglio! Li adoro. Questo è realizzato in maglina…la vestibilità è molto comoda (Guardate il modello del vestito Kate di Style Arc per un paragone). La stoffa a sinistra è Liberty e nero a destra…che sul libro dicono essere un colore versatile perché potete usarlo anche per andare ai funerali (adoro quando trovo queste chicche nei libri di cucito…ti dice molto sulla cultura)
Here is a very simple long chiffon skirt paired with an open-back tunic. Love the neckline.

Una semplice gonna lunga di chiffon con una tunica con scollo sul dietro. Mi piace molto lo scollo.
A lined A-line dress in a white lace over a black polyester crepe de chine. These fabrics are sewn together and treated as one.

Un vestito scampanato e foderato. In questo caso si tratta di pizzo con una fodera di Crepe de Chine in poliestere. Le stoffe vengono cucite insieme e trattate come se fossero una sola.
The thing I love most about this dress is its detachable collar. I would probably make the dress as a blouse rather than a dress and wear it over skinny pants.

La cosa che mi piace di più di questo modello è il colletto staccabile. Se lo cucissi opterei per accorciarlo e farci una camicia da mettere su dei pantaloni a sigaretta.
This is actually not a dress but a blouse and skirt set. The skirt has an elastic waist and the blouse has a keyhole opening at the back.

Questo non è un vestito ma una blusa con gonna. La gonna ha un elastico in vita e la blusa ha un´apertura posteriore a goccia.
Here is a Japanese jumpsuit in a Liberty fabrics. I’m afraid the pants are way to wide for me.

Una tuta giapponese in Liberty. Trovo i pantaloni davvero troppo ampi per i miei gusti.
And finally a Chiffon Mini dress…I’m totally in love with the fabric.

E per finire un vestito in chiffon…stoffa meravigliosa.

All patterns are provided on a sturdy paper and are nested as you can see here. In any case…much better than Burda’s!

I cartamodelli sono tracciati su carta piuttosto pesante e le parti sono sovrapposte come si vede qui sopra. A ogni modo sono molto meglio di quelle di Burda!

I’m enclosing the size chart for reference…however, from experience I wouldn’t take it too literally…as you could see from the pictures there’s a lot of built-in ease.
