How are you doing? My sewing has immensely slowed down these past few weeks due to the heat wave…my sewing area in up on the attic without airco…I’ve been thinking how lucky I am sewing is a hobby for me!

If you’ve watched the first season of the British Sewing Bee you probably remember Lauren. She has the most incredible smile and set up a fabulous Haberdashery store in Birmingham, UK: Guthrie and Ghani…and like many participants released a book Learn to sew with Lauren Well, I don’t actually own the book, but purchased an issue of Love Sewing magazine where the top pattern was featured!

Come state? In queste ultime settimane ho cucito pochissimo per il caldo…la mia zona cucito e’ in mansarda senza aria condizionata…ho pensato quanto sia fortunata a cucire solo per hobby!

Se avete visto la prima stagione della British Sewing Bee forse ricorderete Lauren. Ha un sorriso bellissimo e ha aperto una meravigliosa merceria a Birmingham, nel Regno Unito Guthrie and Ghani…e come alcuni altri partecipanti ha scritto un libro Learn to sew with Lauren (Impara a cucire con Lauren). In realtà io non ho il libro ma ho acquistato il numero della rivista Love Sewing in cui davano il cartamodello!

My initial idea was to make a sparkly top…but before cutting into my fabric I went ahead and refashioned one of the many men’s shirt I was kindly donated for my sewing experiments …Sewing is like a Science Lab!

I couldn’t find many reviews on this top…but found one that warned about sizes running large. I have to confirm that. I am technically a size 10 but used a size 8 instead. The main issue was bagginess in the underarm area. Other than this fitting this top is very straightforward. The yoke is fully lined so you don’t need to install any bias binding to finish the armholes (always a big plus to me!)

Avevo pensato di fare un top ‘brillante’…ma prima di tagliare la stoffa ho fatto una prova usando la mia scorta di camicie da uomo che mi è stata donata per fare esperimenti…il Cucito è il mio Laboratorio!

Non avevo trovato molte recensioni su questo top…tranne una che diceva che le taglie erano grandi. E confermo. Avrei dovuto usare la 10 ma ho usato la 8. Era troppo larga nel giromanica. A parte questo è un capo che non richiede particolari modifiche. La parte superiore è foderata quindi non avete bisogno di rifinire il giromanica con lo sbieco (preferisco evitarlo!)

I initially planned to make the pleated version…unfortunately there is an issue with the markings on the pattern (they are off by 1cm approx.) so I turned to gathering instead. I didn’t feel like doing the maths at that stage. I would suppose this is just an issue with the magazine pattern. In any case I would advise you to check the pattern by folding the pleats and ensuring it matches the front yoke part.

The instructions are very detailed so assembling the pattern doesn’t really pose a problem.

All’inizio volevo fare la versione a pieghe…purtroppo le indicazioni erano sbagliate (i segnetti erano spostati di circa 1 cm) e quindi ho semplicemente arricciato la stoffa. Non avevo voglia di fare i calcoli. Credo il problema sia presente solo nella versione della rivista. Ad ogni modo vi suggerirei di verificare prima piegando il cartamodello e assicurandovi che coincida con la parte superiore.

Comunque le istruzioni sono molto dettagliate e consentono di assemblare il capo senza problemi.
In terms of construction there are two section that need hand-stitching. The first is the collar lining to the joke top and the second is the front joke lining. The first time I followed the instructions…but when I made the pattern again I realized you can actually machine-stitich the first seam and then turn the whole thing out. Less hand stitching is good for me as I am awfully slow at it.

As I was using a man’s shirt I reused the closure for the bottom back…this is why my buttons go from right to left! And I’ve just noticed I forgot to button the last button…duh!

Per quanto riguarda l’assemblaggio ci sono due punti in cui viene richiesto di cucire a mano. Il primo è la cucitura della fodera del colletto alla parte superiore e la seconda la fodera della parte superiore alla parte esterna. La prima volta ho seguito le istruzioni…ma per il secondo mi sono resa conto che si può tranquillamente cucire la prima cucitura a mano e rigirare poi il tutto. Preferisco limitare le cuciture a mano perché sono molto lenta.

Come forse noterete, visto che usavo delle camicie reciclate ho approfittato per recurperare l’abbottonatura davanti…per questo motivo il mio capo si abbottona al contrario! E mi sono resa conto solo ora che non avevo abbottonato un bottone per le foto…che scema!
