I’m a little overdue with this post…like two months 😉 I wanted to sew a project from Handmade Bags in Natural Fabric before reviewing the book Tuttle Publishing sent me.
Sono un po’ in ritardo con questo post…di due mesi 😉 Volevo cucire uno dei progetti del libro Handmade Bags in Natural Fabric (Borse fatte a mano con stoffe naturali) che mi aveva spedito Tuttle Publishing.
The perfect Japanese Linen has been waiting in my stash for the past three years. It has a lovely French recipe for La Brioche Perdue (which echoes a popular recipe: Le Pain Perdu, a French toast cousin)
Avevo gia’ la stoffa adatta…un lino giapponese che aspettava di essere usato da 3 anni. Sulla stoffa e’ stampata una ricetta francese La Brioche Perdue (questa ricetta fa eco ad una famosa ricetta francese che si chiama Le Pain Perdu, simile al French toast…del pane raffermo inzuppato in un mix di uova, latte e, volendo, cannella e cotto in padella…buonissimo!)The pattern had this lovely embroidery design so I decided to give it a try using Coats Seta Reale silk thread…not perfect by any means…I’m just a newbie.
Sul cartamodello c’era anche il disegno per fare un ricamo cosi’ ci ho provato usando il filo Seta Reale di Cucirini & Coats…non e’ perfetto ma sono una principiante del ricamo.
I can’t wait to use it for my groceries…or whatever.
Non vedo l’ora di usarla per portarci la spesa…o altro.

The coolest thing about this bag is that it folds into the small pocket…perfect for carrying it around in your purse and hold that extra shopping…just don’t use a very thick fabric or it will never fit ;o)
La cosa geniale e’ che la borsa puo’ essere ripiegata nella taschina..perfetta per metterla in borsa e portarci cosi’ gli acquisti fatti…vi consiglio solo di non scegliere della stoffa troppo pesante per la borsa o non riuscirete a ripiegarla 😉
The Book Review / Recensione del libro
Now that you’ve seen my Ecobag…let’s have a look at the book. Unlike other sewing books all 60 projects included here are meant to be hand-sewn…yes, you read correctly by hand. I didn’t do it though ;o) whatever method you prefer the result will be the same. It’s been translated to English so following it is a lot easier… although I still recommend having a good read through the instructions before getting started.
Ora che avete visto la mia borsa ecologica…diamo un’occhiata al resto del libro. Diversamente da altri libri, i progetti inclusi in questo libro sono pensati per essere cuciti a mano…si’ avete letto bene a mano. Io non l’ho fatto pero’ indipendentemente dal metodo scelto il risultato sara’ lo stesso. E’ stato tradotto in inglese (purtroppo le case editrici sembra non vogliano ancora investire nell’italiano) quindi sara’ piu’ accessibile che in giapponese…vi consiglio comunque di leggere bene le istruzioni fino alla fine prima di cominciare. 
In my project there were mostly french seams…except for the bottom, which I added anyway.
La mia borsa era rifinita con cuciture all’inglese quasi dappertutto…l’unica eccezione era il fondo ma l’ho aggiunta io. 
The aesthetics are those you would expect from a Japanese book…simple and beautiful. I love that vase purse at the top…it would make a sweet addition to an evening gown. But more realistically I would sew the purse at the bottom right.
Per quanto riguarda l’estetica, e’ quella che vi aspettereste da un libro giapponese…semplice e bellissima. Adoro la borsa a vaso qui sopra…sarebbe un dettaglio molto particolare da aggiungere ad un vestito da sera. Anche se realisticamente io probabilmente cucirei la borsa in basso a destra.
The book also has a section on equipment, interfacing, bag handles and closures, as well as basic hand stitches. The book comes with a sheet of full-sized pattern pieces.
Nel libro c’e’ anche una sezione sugli strumenti del cucito, le telette, i manici e le chiusure oltre alle spiegazioni su come realizzare i principali punti a mano. Il libro comprende anche i cartamodelli stampati a grandezza naturale.

Hi Silvia, I saw another giveaway for this exact book a while ago and didn’t enter it because even though I love sewing from Japanese books, I don’t think I have much use for a book about bags. I can mostly make bags from scratch, and I already have all the bags I need. But when I read your review, which emphasises that the bags are supposed to be sewn by hand, I thought of my sister. She loves all kinds of bags (I’m working on two bags for her at the moment, in fact), but she doesn’t have a sewing machine. So wouldn’t this be a fun gift for her? Well, if I win it, we’ll see! (:

Such a lovely looking book. I have never sewn from a Japanese book but have completed a couple of online tutorials. I find the method of construction quite clear, finishing with a clean look. Thank you for sharing this!

I agree with you Natalie. Having sewn from non-translated books too I was impressed to see how well the project turned out. And I also learned a new-to-me technique for assembling a facing…Since then even if I don’t make projects from the book I still like reading through the construction method drawings! What a fabulous bag! I love the idea of being able to fold it up inside its own bag, save paying for plastic bags every time you go shopping!

Mi piace lo stile minimale, pulito e delicato dei libri giapponesi. Non ho mai avuto la fortuna di averne tra le mani uno, ma su Instagram seguo diverse ragazze che postano le foto dei loro lavori.. mi piacciono un sacco. Quindi perché non tentare! 😉 La tua borsa mi piace un sacco. Il modello e la stoffa non sono usuali per cui farai un figurone ogni volta che “la porterai a spasso!”. 😉 xoxo

This looks really nice (both the bag and the book!). I am so curious as to how the bag is made to fold into the pouch.

Hi Jen, folding the bag into the pouch is very easy. You basically fold the bag in three width-wise and then fold it down to the pouch size lengthwise. Once you have that you fold it into the pouch. Once you have the bag in your hands it will be self-evident. The book doesn’t actually tell you how to do it but you can figure it out.

This is the first Japanese sewing book that’s ever appealed to me. That vase bag looks awesome (although, honestly, I’m hand-sewing as little as possible).

Like you I don’t do much hand-sewing…but the designs are nice and simple to make. I like it that they explain which interfacing to use…so the bag turns out nicely

In questo periodo mi è venuta una passione sfrenata per il cucito vero e proprio (cucire abiti) e non l’avrei mai detto sinceramente perché ho timore che sia una strada troppo difficile per me …. ma voglio provarci! Si’ si’ provaci! Non e’ troppo difficile. Sicuramente cominciare dai vestiti per bambini e’ una buona idea per due motivi..c’e’ meno stoffa da gestire e meno problemi di vestibilita’. Detto questo se scegli delle bluse/vestiti semplici da donna come ad esempio quelle di Aime comme marie, Marisa MLM, Tilly and the Buttons, Sewaholic puoi sicuramente creare un bel capo anche per te! Comunque sono qui se hai bisogno!

Have one Pattern Magic book lying around (the second), but honestly never made anything from it. Bags seem to be more doable, though.. and they look really interesting!

El bolso es perfecto!!! Y el bordado le da un toque único y personal, qué más se puede pedir?? por supuesto, me apunto de cabeza al giveaway… sería agradable ir cosiendo algunos de ellos , tú y yo a la vez y disfrutar de la variedad de dos bolsos con un mismo patrón. Un besazo, Silvia.
