My good luck was very short lived….disaster stroke a few days ago!

La fortuna e’ durata poco…e’ successo un disastro qualche giorno fa!

My lovely Bernina 800DL serger decided to die…what’s most surprising is that I only owned it for 18 months and I have been extremely careful

I was in total and utter shock…actually I still am. If you ever wondered whether you can get serger anxiety (or sewing machine anxiety for that matter)…well, yes.
And let me tell you I am normally somebody who doesn’t stress or panics too much…but there are exceptions!

 

La mia bellissima taglia e cuci Bernina 800DL ha smesso di funzionare… la cosa strana e’ che ce l’ho solo da 18 mesi e l’ho sempre trattata con cura.

Ero completamente scioccata…anzi lo sono ancora. Se vi siete mai chieste se vi puo’ venire l’ansia per una taglia e cuci (o anche per una macchina da cucire)…posso dirvi di si’. E io di solito non mi stresso e non panico facilmente…ma a volte faccio eccezione!

My serger is jammed. How did it happen? I changed the threads to start working on Peony and then turned it on to let the stitches form….hit the pedal as usual but all of a sudden I felt something stopped. As if I had hit resistance…All I could see is that the differential was up and not going down anymore.

I looked to see if there was anything blocking the movement…at first I thought a shaft may have come off. I didn’t want to force the handwheel to avoid breaking it further. I immediately sent an email to the seller…who told me to try oiling the looper shaft. I did and tried to move the wheel as instructed…but then it was totally jammed…not turning anymore.

Thankfully the serger is still under warranty (2 years is the law in Europe)…the only problem is that I have to send it back to the UK where I bought it.

La taglia e cuci e’ totalmente bloccata. Come e’ potuto succedere? Ho cambiato i fili per cominciare a cucire il vestito Peony e l’ho accesa per far formare la catenella…ho spinto sul pedare come al solito ma tutto ad un tratto ho sentito come una resistenza… l’unica cosa che ho capito e’ che il differenziale rimaneva alzato e non scendeva piu’ giu’.

Ho controllato se non ci fosse qualcosa che ostruisse il movimento… all’inizio pensavo che l’asse fosse allentato. Non volevo forzare la manopola per evitare di peggiorare la situazione. Quindi ho spedito un’email al rivenditore…che mi ha detto di provare ad oliare l’asse del crochet. L’ho fatto e ho provato a girare la manopola come mi aveva detto… ma poi si e’ bloccata del tutto e non girava piu’.

Per fortuna la taglia e cuci e’ ancora in garanzia (2 anni per legge in Europa)… l’unico problema e’ che devo rispedirla in Inghilterra perche’ l’ho comprata li’.

At this point you can probably tell why I got anxious…not to mention that I don’t trust the postal service for such valuable items…so I had to find a courier that would cost at little as possible…unfortunately from Italy you can’t get anything below 100 euros (that 130 USD!)…talk about captive market!

After loads of dithering…I decided to send it anyway…not knowing whether the machine can be repaired I thought it would be easier to get a replacement under warranty than if I take it to a repair shop here.

So since Friday my serger is in the UK…hoping somebody will look at it and repair it soon…then I will need to get it shipped back from Bournemouth… before Christmas.

A questo punto capirete l’ansia…anche perche’ non mi fido di spedire oggetti di valore con il servizio postale…quindi ho cercato un corriere economico…purtroppo dall’Italia non si trova nulla sotto i 100 Euro… chiaramente e’ un mercato molto vincolato.

Dopo aver valutato varie opzioni…ho deciso di spedirla…non sapendo se la taglia e cuci possa essere riparata ho pensato sarebbe stato piu’ semplice farla sostistuire in garanzia che portarla a far riparare presso un negozio qui.

Quindi da venerdi’ la taglia e cuci e’ in Inghilterra… spero che la riparino presto… poi dovro’ farmela rispedire da Bournemouth…prima di Natale
