Swing dress Burda 08/2012 #133 with a twist

The moment I saw the Swing dress 133 on Burdastyle August, I knew I had to make it. The cotton was already in my stash and I added some fun contrasting details…otherwise it looked too serious. By the way…don’t you think I look just like the Burda model? Well at least I tried when I posed 😉

Da quando ho visto questo vestito su Burda di agosto mi sono messa in testa di farlo. Avevo gia’ la stoffa e ho deciso di aggiungerci qualche dettaglio a contrasto…altrimenti sembravo troppo seriosa. A proposito…non assomiglio alla modella di Burda? Be’ almeno nella posa ho cercato di assomigliarle 😉

If you have seen this dress before you may notice that I added an extra detail at the center front. Now I would look very cool (..or snotty 😉 if I told you it was design that felt would complement Burda dress better…truth is it was a cutting accident! Though I made a muslin and knew the front should be cut on the fold…I forgot! And I didn’t have enough fabric left!

After giving it some thought like cover up the center seam and add some lace or ribbon…I came up with this solution! In the end I actually like it a lot…maybe I should suggest it to Burda!

So, if you are ever confronted with the question: how to fix my bodice that was not cut on fold? Here is an option!

Se avete visto il modello forse noterete che ho aggiunto un dettaglio sul centro. Potrei sicuramente far la figa (o sembrare pretenziosa 😉 se vi dicessi che ho deciso di modificare  il modello con questo dettaglio accattivante (vero Franci?) perche’ faceva risaltare meglio il modello di Burda…purtroppo la realta’ e’ ben altra…ho commesso un errore di taglio! Anche se avevo fatto il modello di prova e sapevo che il davanti andava tagliato sulla ripiegatura della stoffa…al momento del dunque l’ho dimenticato! E ovviamente non avevo piu’ stoffa…

Dopo essermi arrovellata il cervello su come coprire la cucitura centrale, aver pensato a usare del pizzo o un nastrino…mi e’ venuta in mente quest’idea… che ne dite, la propongo a Burda?

Quindi se dovesse capitare anche a voi…ecco un’opzione per sistemare un corpino tagliato male!

Modifications to the pattern:

I started out with my usual size 38, but I had to raise the bust point and move it in slightly. I also shortened the hem by 4 inches. Then I made a forward shoulder adjustment for the first time on a sleeved bodice. I find the bodice fits much better this way. Next time I will try on a long-sleeved top.

Let me advise you NOT to follow Burda construction instructions for this dress. It involves a lot of annoying hand sewing at the armscye. Use Melissa’s tutorial instead. Though it’s for another dress you can use it on this one too. Unfortunately for me I read it after sewing the side seams!

Modifiche al modello:

Ho usato la solita taglia 38, ma ho dovuto spostare la pince sul seno e accorciare l’orlo di 10 cm. Poi ho spostato la cucitura sulla spalla e adattato la manica Era la prima volta che lo facevo su un vestito con le maniche. In questo modo la vestibilita’ e’ migliore. E la prossima volta provero’ su un top a maniche lunghe.

Vi sconsiglio vivamente di seguire le istruzioni di Burda per la costruzione del vestito. Vi ritrovereste a dover fare molte cuciture a mano nel giromanica. Vi consiglio di usare le spiegazioni di Melissa. Anche se sono per un altro modello potete seguirle. Purtroppo io le ho lette troppo tardi.

As you can see I had fun with the details…grosgrain ribbon, rosette brooch, lace hem and even some bias binding. This is the first time I put so many finishing touches on a dress.

Come vedete mi sono divertita con i dettagli…cosa che non avevo ancora mai fatto: cintura in grosgrain, spilla a forma di rosa, coprifilo in pizzo e anche lo sbieco sulle cuciture.

  1. Two gorgeous dresses in a row: lady, you’re on a roll! Is this one for another special occasion or just for fun? At the moment I’m on a sewing hiatus. The weather is too nice to stay inside so I’ve been enjoying the outdoors instead. I hear we’ll have a long rainy winter – there will be plenty of time to sew then.

    1. My sewing wish list is so long that I should sew day and night! No special occasion really for this dress (unless I can add work to it!) …just liked it. Lucky you still have warm days…here it´s been rainy and colder since last Sunday…so make the most out of the warm weather…sewing can wait!

  2. Everything is perfect in this dress, including the cover-page photo shoot! Did you make the flower as well? It’s difficult to switch to the autumn sewing indeed. Even if the autumn is in the air, the weather forecast shows +30C later this week!

  4. Bellissimo! Secondo me la cucitura sul centro davanti lo rende ancora più particolare, decisamente un errore fortunato!
    Anche io faccio ancora fatica a pensare all’autunno, continuo a tirare fuori stoffe leggere, ma prima o poi ci dovremo pur rassegnare!

  8. Beautiful dress and wonderfully finished too. I am currently making this, struggling to get a neat seam line to that bust point but now I’m inspired to get on with it after seeing your great dress. Thanks for sharing

  10. It’s beautiful! I love all the little details you added! Contrast lace hem, hong kong seams, and that brooch is beautiful! And what a great save of your cutting accident, the double seam really sets off the interesting darts! 🙂

  11. A gorgeous dress (excuse me being late to the party!) and you’ve done a fabulous job on those nasty pivot points. And I’m in full agreeance as to the style-ised line down the centre front – It looks great!

  12. You look lovely in your new dress! The extra design feature is especially nice (: Actually, the strip of fabric looks intentional and matches the other lines of the dress – more so than a plain seam would. One of my most common mistakes is to accidentally put a seam on a fold. Ugh.
