After a year of sewing clothes and many more simply hemming pants and sewing couch covers and other simple projects, I have finally bought myself a serger.

I am a gadget lover and a bit of a techie, I have to admit so having a serger was something I have been dreaming for a while. Like many of you I have been pondering over and over, reading reviews, evaluating pros and cons, and of course considering the financial investment.  After all, I just sew for myself and I have no intention of setting up any business or anything.

Back last summer when I took part in Ali’s Summer essential’s sew along I even posted a discussion on Flickr about it to get more ideas about it.

After so much thinking about it (which I could have better used to sew clothes or go for a walk), I decided to go for it.

Thankfully in the UK prices are cheaper compared to other countries and getting products shipped within Europe is easy as they don’t go through customs (God bless the European Union!). And I also have to thank a lovely Christmas present that helped me pay for it ;o)

So, now I can finish clothes much more neatly and I can give a better finish to knits. I am so happy about it.

And I must say that the whole threading business has not been as hard as I would have thought. It’s true that it’s more time consuming than threading a sewing machine, but if you follow the instructions and don’t rush it anybody can do it.

The biggest headache so far has been the three-thread rolled hem. I have been scouring the internet to get the correct settings just to find out that the whole problem I was having was caused by my not having removed the left-needle! The funny thing is that this is nowhere mentioned. It took me days and loads of fussing with settings before finding out the solution was so easy!

If you are wondering why I bought the Bernina 800 DL over other models is that it seemed to be the sturdiest machine according to my online readings. And since I don’t have many sewing machine shops nor the time to go and try them all out, I eventually opted for this model. I am sure I could have been happy with others too… but this one had the self-threading lower looper and two-threads too.

I will have to show you the green jersey cardi I made this weekend thanks to my new toy ;o) I am so excited.
