Another very popular Japanese book is now available in English. When I read the title She Wears the Pants* I was very intrigued. Though I love dresses and skirts…I wear pants regularly and I am always eager to find that perfect fitting pattern that requires zero alterations…ok, it’s a dream!
Unfortunately, when the book arrived I realised it doesn’t include only pants…so the title was referring more to edgy, androginous-style patterns…so good and bad…if you are not into pants you may still be interested in the book…if you wanted exclusively pants…you get 2 trousers and 2 coulottes patterns in this book. Funny enough the French version is called Féminin Masculin The original Japanese title would translate ‘She has a mannish style’…which is much less misleading I find.

Un altro famoso libro giapponese e’ stato tradotto in inglese. Quando ho letto il titolo She Wears the Pants* (Lei porta i pantaloni) ero molto incuriosita. Anche se adoro indossare vestiti e gonne…spesso metto i pantaloni…e sono sempre alla ricerca del cartamodello che calzi alla perfezione senza dover apportare modifiche…ok, e’ un sogno!

Purtroppo quando il libro e’ arrivato ho scoperto che non ci sono solo pantaloni…quindi con il titolo facevano riferimento a uno stile androgino e audace…quindi e’ positivo e negativo…se non vi interessano solo pantaloni questo libro potrebbe fare al caso vostro…se invece volevate un libro specifico…troverete solo due pantaloni e due bermuda. E’ curioso che il titolo del libro in francese e’ Féminin Masculin. E quello originale in giapponese sarebbe ‘Lei ha uno stile maschile’…che trovo sia molto meno fuorviante.

Insomma… il top con scollo a barca e’ incluso nel libro. Potete vederne una versione ‘dal vivo’ sul blog Sew Busy Lizzy.

Coulottes seem to be the latest trend this summer…I am not particularly keen on the style but you could easily shorten them and make shorts instead ;o)

I bermuda sembrano essere l’ultima moda quest’estate. Non e’ uno stile che prediliga…ma si potrebbero facilmente accorciare e creare dei pantalocini corti ;o)

A classic…This blouse is my favorite pattern from the book…possibly what really makes this pattern in the fabric...I’m thinking you could easily stencil some white linen/double gauze and make your own ;o) Anyone up for a challenge?

Un classico…questa camicia e’ il cartamodello che mi piace di piu’ del libro…forse quello che la rende particolare e’ la stoffa…pensavo che si potrebbe facilmente crearla con dello stencil su una stoffa di lino bianco/garza ;o) Qualcuno accetta la sfida?

This is the second coulotte pattern on the book…the whole styling makes it quite difficult to see. They are semi-flared.

Questo e’ il secondo cartamodello di bermuda del libro. Purtroppo lo styling rende molto difficile capire i dettagli. Sono leggermente svasate.
A cowl mini-dress is another classic pattern. This one has cap sleeves and is made for non-stretch fabrics.

Un mini-vestito con collo a cappuccio e’ un altro disegno classico. Questo ha maniche ad aletta ed e’ disegnato per stoffe prive di stretch.
Both the jacket and the sarouels are included in the book. This is not my style at all, I must say.

Entrambi i capi sono inclusi nel libro. Purtroppo nessuno dei due e’ in linea con il mio stile.
This boxy top has quite an intriguing style. I never use velvet but it’s nice to see how they paired it on this top.

Questo top squadrato e’ interessante. Non uso mai il velluto ma e’ interessante veder come l’hanno abbinato.
This mini-dress is a great style to go with leggings. It’s a pity you can’t see the V-neck opening with a bow at the front and crossover straps at the back. The sleeve style is also quite cool.

Questo mini-vestito ha uno stile adatto ai leggins. Peccato che dalla foto non si riesca a vedere lo scollo a V con un fiocchetto davanti e degli incroci sul dietro. Anche le maniche sono belle.

As Japanese books are notably sized small…here is the sizing chart…The positive think for me is that for once I find something for my height…but then I am in-between sizes for everything else!

Visto che le taglie sui libri giapponesi sono notoriamente piccole…ecco quelle di questo libro. La cosa positiva per me e’ che sono adatte alla mia altezza…anche se poi per le altre misure sono un mix di taglie!

If you’ve read any of my previous Japanese books reviews, the instructions are those you’d come to expect. Loads of diagrams and little text.

Se avete letto le mie precedenti recensioni di libri giapponesi, le istruzioni sono simili. Molti disegni e poco testo.

This book includes also a couple of pages on techniques… something I find very interesting. Seam allowances are not included on the patterns.

Il libro contiene qualche pagina di tecniche, cosa che trovo sempre interessante. I margini di cucitura non sono compresi nei cartamodelli.

With its total 20 patterns covering all wardrobe items and including a knitted belt stole and tippets would allow you to achieve a consistent edgy look.  Personally, as I was expecting a different book there are only a couple of patterns I would make. Nonetheless I enjoyed exploring a book with a different style and find some inspiration for future makes.

Con i suoi 20 cartamodelli potrete confezionare un intero guardaroba dallo stile androgino. Pensate che c’e’ anche il modello di una cintura/stola da fare a maglia e delle bretelle. Per quanto mi riguarda, mi aspettavo un libro diverso e ci sono solo un paio di modelli che farei. Nonostante questo sono stata contenta di aver avuto l’opportunita’ di sfogliare un libro dallo stile diverso e trovare ispirazione per qualche futuro progetto.
